October 2, 2016
Philippians 1:1 - Phil. 2:5 - 1 Corinthians 2:10-3:5 - Romans 12:2 - I John 2:20-27

In this introduction to the book of Philippians we take a look at some key words and terms; what it means to have the mind of Christ; and the importance of having a “here and now” attitude and perspective in life. Understanding what it means to “have the mind of Christ” plays a significant role in how to approach life.

Part 2
Paul’s Conversion and Resolve

October 9, 2016
Acts 9 - Philippians 1:1

The apostle Paul was quite a character. As the author of Philippians we learn about his pre-Christian experiences, as he sought to destroy the church of God. But God had a different plan – even to using the death of Stephen to bring about Paul’s conversion. We too may have regrets about our past – but learn from Paul’s resolve, not to waste the grace of God in our post-conversion experiences.

Servants & Saints

October 16, 2016
Philippians 1:1-2

Servants & Saints. Truly an interesting combination – but not a contradiction. Most people would consider these titles as opposite ends of the “status class”. But Jesus demonstrates that He is both. Saints are ordinary people know Jesus as Savior and Lord – and their occupation as a Christian is to be one of a Servant. Are you a Christian? Then you are both a servant and a saint!

Part 4
God finishes what He starts

October 23, 2016
Philippians 1:1-6

The apostle Paul had a lot to discourage him – yet he remained joyful and thankful. What kept his perspective unspoiled and his hopes undiminished? Paul was a true follower of Jesus Christ – but God had started something that still needed His finished touches. And what role did the church at Philippi play in Paul’s joyful perspective?

Part 5
Boundless Love

November 6, 2016
Philippians 1:7-11

It’s difficult some times to pray – even though it is a privilege to do so. Many times we just don’t know what to say. So as Paul encouraged and challenged each early church through his prayers for them, it’s just as possible for us to do the same in our day. Praying Scripture is very Biblical, God-honoring and, well, it’s the right thing to do!

Part 6
Paul’s Prison Ministry

November 13, 2016
Philippians 1:12-26

Having the mind of Christ means it’s more important for people to know about Jesus – than about me: my health and welfare for example. Paul’s desire was for the message of Jesus Christ to be proclaimed – whether you’re in a tough situation or not. Let God take care of “motives” – let us be sure to do our part in “magnifying” Him

Part 7
Keys to Living a Life Worthy of the Gospel

November 20, 2016
Philippians 1:27-30

There is a right way and a wrong way to live – simple as that. There are activities and attitudes that we are expected to “put on” – others to “take off” – and yet others to simply “put away”. Jesus expects His followers to live a life that clearly shows they really do understand the value and worth of their salvation.

Part 8
Unity Requires Humility

November 27, 2016
Philippians 2:1-4

We all struggle with pride. It’s the foundational sin it seems that is a constant barrier to developing and living out the mind of Christ. What can be done about it? Paul reminds us of some foundational truths, challenges us with a command, and moves into some practical steps to build unity in the body of Christ – in spite of, or better, to help us replace our pride.

Theology of Christmas (1) – Humiliation of Jesus Christ

December 4, 2016
Philippians 2:5-8

The story of Christmas begins a long time before Bethlehem. It begins in eternity past. The first part of the Christmas story of Jesus is the outworking of John 1:14 – how God the Son became like us and lived among us. He came to live with us, identify with us – and eventually die for us. That’s the story of humility, submission and love!

Part 10
Theology of Christmas (2) – Exaltation of Jesus Christ

December 11, 2016
Philippians 2:9-11

The story of Christmas does not begin in Bethlehem – nor does it end on the cross. Having humbled himself, and having died for our sins on the cross, Jesus was raised from the dead – that’s the resurrection part of the gospel story. God the Father exalted Jesus, God the Son - in name and position above all. That’s the story of reward, exaltation and glory!

Part 11
Living Our What You Believe

January 8, 2017
Philippians 2:12-18

God is not asking anyone to any other than themselves. God created us to be unique. For the Christian, God is asking us to live out an authentic Christ-like life. That means to live without complaining or arguing and to live innocent of evil. If I say I’m a Christian then there will be evident change in my conduct, my character and my various commitments in life.

Part 12
Living a life worthy of Being Imitated – Focus on Timothy & Epaphroditus

January 15, 2017
Philippians 2:17-30

The Christian life is hard enough without feeling that I always have to measure up to people like the apostle Paul. Although our ultimate model is Jesus Christ, God has graciously given us other individuals who show us that becoming more and more like Christ is indeed possible. Some might say they are role models: just average people who are little known (Timothy) or even unknown (Epaphroditus). These two show us that Christ-like maturity is possible. But it does require some “risk-taking”.

Part 13
Beware of the Dogs

January 22, 2017
Philippians 3:1-6

Paul gives the church at Philippi a word of caution – that not everyone who speaks in the name of the Lord, is of the Lord. Watch out for wolves in sheep’s clothing. His own salvation experience becomes a word of counsel to the church. And he concludes with a word of contrast. Christians should have different values evidenced in our worship, in what we value and in whom we place our confidence. Be discerning.

Part 14
New Life – New Desires

January 29, 2017
Philippians 3:7-11

Having the mind of Christ involves pursuing things in life that matter to God. It may mean giving up some things or pursuits that were of value to me before I met Christ as my Savior. But now I need to evaluate if those things are quite possibly holding me back from my new pursuit to “know Christ”. Paul’s treasures became “trash” – because his new treasure was Jesus.

Part 15
A New Determination: A Present and Future Focus

February 5, 2017
Philippians 3:12-17 Philippians 3:20-21

The apostle Paul had a focused life. Jesus Christ changed his life. What was a treasure had now become trash or worthless to him for trying to earn salvation. His life now involved forgetting the past and pressing on to know Christ. Heaven is our ultimate destination – the final finish line. But Paul realized that his “life race” needed to completed here and now. And it involved a “real determination” to run so as to win.

Part 16
Stand Firm in the Faith

February 12, 2017
Philippians 4:1-9

The encouragement from the Lord is to stand firm in what you believe no matter what the opposition. Trouble can come at us from all directions even from others in the church. There are at least six principles to standing firm including how to Fight Fair. Think right, pray right and live right are so important to a Christians ability to remain joyful and victorious.

Part 17
Learn to be Content

February 19, 2017
Philippians 4:10-13

Highly prized but very elusive is the ability to be content. Paul addresses the issues of anxiety and discontentment two issues most people face daily that causes them to remain discontented. A contented person is confident in God's sovereignty, God's provisions, God's directions and God's strength. But remember it's something we all must learn. It doesn't come easy.

Principles for Giving (1)

February 26, 2017
Philippians 4:14-15 2 Corinthians 8 & 2 Corinthians 9

There is more information in the Bible that one can share in just one message, about giving, finances and money. Working through the verses, especially in 2 Corinthians 8 & 2 Corinthians 9, there are some wonderful truths that can help get someone starting towards Biblical giving. Remember – God doesn’t need our money. But money and giving, are ways that demonstrate to God (and ourselves) where our loves and priorities are.

Part 19
Learn to Give (2)

March 5, 2017
Philippians 4:16-23

Confident living – contented living – a life that gives: all part of having the mind of Christ. I need to recognize that God owns everything. And, that God will provide for me just what I need when I need it – to accomplish what He has designed and desires for me to do in this life. Philippians begins with “grace” and ends with a benediction of ‘grace”. It constantly reminds us of our need as well, to think like Jesus – to have the mind of Christ.
